How early years education works in England

Reception Entry

In England, children typically start Reception (Year R) in the September following their 4th birthday. Most children start school in the academic year they turn 5, but they can start earlier if there are available places.

30 Hours Free Childcare

Eligible working parents can get up to 30 hours a week (equivalent to 1,140 hours a year). From the term after a child turns 9 months eligible parents can apply. Eligibility and start-date depend on the parent's circumstances and application/code validation.

Compulsory Education

Education becomes compulsory the term after a child's 5th birthday. However, most children start Reception the year before this.

Ofsted Standards

Most state schools and registered early-years providers are regulated by Ofsted. Some independent schools are inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) or other authorised bodies.
