When can my child start nursery in Scotland?

How early years education works in Scotland
P1 Entry
In Scotland, children typically start Primary 1 (P1) between ages 4½ and 5½. Children born March-August start in the August of the year they turn 5. Children born September-February start in August before they turn 5 and can defer for one year if desired.
Early Learning and Childcare
All 3 and 4-year-olds in Scotland are entitled to 1,140 hours of funded early learning and childcare per year (equivalent to 30 hours per week during term time).
Deferral Options
If your child was born between 1st September and 28th/29th February, you can choose to defer their school entry by one year. During the deferred year, they remain entitled to their funded early learning and childcare place.
