How early years education works in Wales

Reception Entry

In Wales, children typically start Reception in the September following their 4th birthday. The system is similar to England but with Welsh-specific programs like Flying Start.

Flying Start

The Flying Start programme provides free part-time childcare (12.5 hours/week) for 2-3 year-olds in eligible areas, along with enhanced health visiting and family support.

Childcare Offer for Wales

Working parents can get up to 30 hours of early education and childcare per week for 3 and 4-year-olds for up to 48 weeks a year (income up to £100,000).

Curriculum for Wales

Since 2022 the Curriculum for Wales has replaced the Foundation Phase, but the early years still centre on learning through play, from nursery through to the end of primary school.

Please note: This calculator provides general guidance based on Welsh education policies. School admission requirements and dates can vary by local authority. For definitive information, please contact your local council or the specific school you're interested in.
