Scotland School System

P1 Entry: In Scotland, children typically start Primary 1 (P1) between ages 4½ and 5½. Children born March-August start in the August of the year they turn 5. Children born September-February start in August before they turn 5 and can defer for one year if desired.

Early Learning and Childcare: All 3 and 4-year-olds in Scotland are entitled to 1,140 hours of funded early learning and childcare per year (equivalent to 30 hours per week during term time).

Deferral Options: If your child was born between 1st September and 28th/29th February, you can choose to defer their school entry by one year. During the deferred year, they remain entitled to their funded early learning and childcare place.
