Smarties Nursery is a small and cosy 'home from home’ style of childcare setting. We try to replicate the home environment so children feel safe and secure whilst you are out at work. This helps children to grow and develop, acquiring essential social skills and the ability to learn.
With safety and security in mind, all staff are DBS checked, trained in Paediatric First Aid and Safeguarding; there is an approved fire detection and evacuation system in place and there is CCTV and a door entry system. We are proud to have remained open to Key Workers throughout the Covid Pandemic.
An enabling environment allows children to develop their curiosity and skills whilst exploring alone or with friends. This promotes independence, whilst children know they can seek adult support when they need it.
Qualified and experienced staff ensure their teaching methods are adapted for different situations and scaffold children’s learning; and sustained shared thinking extends children’s critical thinking skills, so they develop skills they will need when they start primary school.
Key Persons ensure that each child is safe, secure and nurtured and that teaching is tailored to their interests and style of learning. Older children work with their key person to plan their day and long-term projects. Younger children’s planning is based upon current interests and children's individual schemas and learning styles.

Younger children enjoy smaller ratios of 1 staff to 3 children, so their individual needs are cared for sensitively and activities are extended based upon their own interests or schemas. Staff will balance the day to ensure children have their own time to explore and time being supported by their Key Person. Children in this age group may have their own sleep timetable, however we do find that they quickly settle-in to our routines, as they don't like to miss out! A typical day consists of breakfast, out in the pushchairs or garden, snack, activity, cooked lunch, activity, sleep, activity, tea, garden activity, snack, getting ready to go home. Pictured below are some of the children from our caterpillars group enjoying some educational and fun activities.
Butterflies is the name of the 2-3 year old age group and the staff to child ratio will change to 1:4. Children must be able to negotiate the stairs independently to move upstairs. There are three rooms upstairs: Seahorse Room offers resources such as small world, train tracks and dressing up role play. The Butterfly Room has a giant smart board for Education City - individualised educational computer programmes in Maths. English and Science. They also have use of the messy room and messy garden at the side of the nursery., so they can access the garden independently. Children are free to explore all the resources and different environments and are very much involved in planning their group projects. They receive regular quality time with teachers to ‘get them ready for school’, from looking after their personal independence: toileting, dressing and seeking help. They also receive one-to-one sessions with their teacher to learn phonics, mathematics and conduct elementary science experiments. Pictured below are some of the children from our pre-school group enjoying some educational and fun activities.
Our teachers have a wealth of experience in this field and offer compassionate childcare services. Our pre-school welcomes children of 3 and 4 years of age. We maintain a fun, comforting and educational pre-school environment where your child is sure to enjoy learning new things. From expressive art and understanding of the world, to effective communication and personal and social development, we'll see that every child is given the best opportunity to develop the skills needed for the next stage of their education. We're located in Meols. Speak to a member of our staff for more information.
